The National Theatre broke ground in 1969 with our own Bill Hertz and Shirley Jones at the ground breaking ceremony. The Theatre was originally slated to be the "Fox Westwood" by it's owners, Fox West Coast Theatres. But later called the National Theatre in 1970 when it opened with it's first film "The Boys in the Band".
In 1973 the theatre had an exclusive engagement for about 5 months before going wide of the movie "The Exorcist". People waited hours to see this movie and weekends often looked like a premiere to passers by with patrons spilling out into the street. Producer William Friedkin at one point showed up to serve the patrons coffee while waiting in line. It has 1100 seats and is one of the largest single screens in California. It's retro 1960's 1970's style can still be seen today. It is home to some of the most famous movie openings in history (Top Gun, Indiana Jones 1 & 2, Fidler on the Roof, Spiderman just to name a few).
Seating Capacity: 1106
